Start with Your Reader in Mind<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Now this might sound obvious, but I feel like it\u2019s my duty to put this disclaimer out here: no matter what kind of sophisticated, data-driven tools, statistics and metrics you\u2019re going to throw at the content ideation game, you have to keep your reader in mind. Always.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably the number one mistake I see in the content marketing sphere: <strong class=\"translation-block\">egocentric content<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">It\u2019s content that plays into the interests of the creator. Stuff that <em>you<\/em> find interesting, in <em>your<\/em> words, at <em>your<\/em> level of expertise, solving <em>your<\/em> problems and answering <em>your<\/em> questions. Unless your targeting your own clone, it\u2019s just not going to help you hit those goals you included in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/content-strategy\">your content strategy<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"translation-block\">I hate to break it to you, but as a content creator, the universe does not revolve around you. It revolves around your ideal reader.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Put yourself in the shoes of your prospects and show a little empathy.\u00a0 Any content idea brainstorm should start with these questions in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">What questions do they have about your product, service, industry or niche?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">What are they struggling with?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">What problem(s) can you help solve?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">What should they know? How can you educate them?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">What are their challenges and pain points?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">What do they read on the interwebs?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Are there specific blogs or websites they frequently visit?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Any groups, memberships or forums they are part of?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">It can be a useful exercise to gather this information and structure it in one or more <strong>marketing persona\u2018s <\/strong>you can keep coming back to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Persona\u2019s are archetypal people to represent your ideal customers \u2013 either as a basic sketch or an in-depth and layered portrait. Anything you can do to <strong>understand your audience<\/strong> is going to help you plan and craft strategic content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Even better than just <em>guessing<\/em> what your audience finds engaging, however, is actually turning to them for answers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\">\n<h2 id=\"8fkd3\">2. Ask Your Audience<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Again, before turning to technical tools, use common sense and find the intel you\u2019re looking for at the source: your audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">You could simply <strong>post a question or a poll <\/strong>on your social media profiles. For example, \u201cWhat content would you like to see us sharing?\u201d. If you have a sense of what they may be looking for, you can create a poll and list a few options.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image regular\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.storychief.com\/account_481\/Schermafbeelding2019-08-27om17_45_24_161f581a3a530408ed77cfb1f968bb7e_800.png\" alt=\"\"><figcaption class=\"translation-block\">We polled a large Facebook group (aligning with our target group) on this very Masterclass.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">You can post it on your own profiles, in groups (if the rules allow for it) or create a poll on Facebook or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopperhq.com\/blog\/instagram-story-templates\/\">Instagram stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Alternatively, you can pose the question <strong>on your blog or email your list<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">If you really want to drill down deep, consider creating a <strong>survey<\/strong> with a tool like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typeform.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Typeform<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visme.co\/form-builder\/\">Visme<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SurveyMonkey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/forms\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Forms<\/a>\u00a0or another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jotform.com\/google-forms-alternative\/\">Google Forms alternative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Finally, don\u2019t forget to search in <strong>places where you\u2019re already talking with your audience<\/strong>. Dig through customer service surveys, interactions on social media, FAQs and Q&amp;As. Analyse your customer touch points systematically and you\u2019ll be amazed at what kind of intel you can uncover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As you\u2019re gathering information, consider <strong>audience intent<\/strong> because simply knowing what topic your audience is interested in will only get you so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In addition, ask yourself what they want from the information on that topic. Are they just researching? Shopping around? Something else still?<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This is the stuff that can turn your content from great to conversion-worthy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\">\n<h2 id=\"9vnch\">3. Everybody Go Surfin\u2019 (for Content Ideas)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Talking to your prospects and customers directly is ideal, but if you haven\u2019t got them on speed dial (or if you\u2019re short on time), there are other shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Back when I was still at school (waaaaay back that is, I\u2019m talking pre-internet days), there really was only one place to turn for inspiration on tap: the public library. \ud83d\udcda<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Now, while you could still obviously go there, you can also work from the comfort of your own home or office and find inspiration from these online substitutes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon<\/a> book listings<\/li>\n<li>Research podcasts on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itunes.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"translation-block\">iTunes<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Look up popular videos on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"translation-block\">YouTube<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Find popular presentations on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"translation-block\">Slideshare<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Browse relevant topics on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quora.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"translation-block\">Quora<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The idea is straightforward: if people are creating books, podcasts and videos about certain topics, there must be an interested audience paying attention to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Look for videos that went viral or best-selling books and investigate: what exact topics did they cover?<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Really <strong>dive deep and look for concrete content ideas<\/strong>, not just broad themes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">On Amazon, for example, you can view the table of contents of most popular books \u2013 just take a cue from there. Look up popular episodes of relevant podcasts and be inspired. Or have a look at which videos are ranking high on YouTube and see what exact topics they\u2019re covering. Unlike my kids, the tool organizes the questions in categories such as what, where and why and as such, it provides an overview of the questions people are typing into search engines from their various devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This way, you can figure out what your audience is actually asking in relation to your product. With your content, you can meet the needs of our audience by delivering valuable answers to those questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As an added bonus, you can organize your findings in a Google Sheet and research them SEO-wise in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ads.google.com\/intl\/nl_be\/home\/tools\/keyword-planner\/\">Google Keyword Planner<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubersuggest.io\/\">Ubersuggest<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/moz.com\/\">Moz<\/a><\/u> or another SEO tool of your choice. In <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzsumo.com\/\">Buzzsumo<\/a><\/u>\u2019s case: much more!<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Buzzsumo also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">shows the number of shares and <strong>social<\/strong> engagements<\/li>\n<li>identifies <strong class=\"translation-block\">key sharers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>displays <strong class=\"translation-block\">backlinks<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">shows top <strong>trending<\/strong> content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In other words, you can quickly tell how well a particular topic is performing and what\u2019s resonating most with readers. Running a few searches in Buzzsumo should provide new angles for your content in minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"aje\">Ubersuggest<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">At first glance, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubersuggest.io\/\">Ubersuggest<\/a><\/u> is like Google Keyword Planner, only more streamlined. Enter a keyword, and UberSuggest will supply you with dozens, sometimes hundreds, of phrases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">But it doesn\u2019t just provide keywords \u2013 the tool also has a feature called \u2013 wait for it \u2013 \u201ccontent ideas\u201d! It lists out all of the articles that people have written in the past that contain the keywords you\u2019re researching. You\u2019ll see over 100 content ideas so you\u2019ll have a lot to choose from.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The results are sorted by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong class=\"translation-block\">Social shares<\/strong> \u2013 which content got the most shares on social sites?<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"translation-block\">Estimated visits<\/strong> \u2013 how many visits is each article receiving from Google? And what are the keywords that each article ranks for?<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"translation-block\">Backlinks<\/strong> \u2013 how many people are linking to each article? Steal a Content Idea (or Two) from the Competition<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Let\u2019s get real for a moment: obviously you\u2019re already reading your competitors\u2019 content and watching what you think works and what doesn\u2019t (amiright?). But there are also ways you can sneak a peek farther behind the curtain of what your industry \u2013 ahem \u2013 <em>peers<\/em> are working on. \ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udcbb<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Provided they\u2019re targeting the same audience, it\u2019s likely that their star content will also appeal to your prospects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Those <strong>searches you did on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzsumo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buzzsumo<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubersuggest.io\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ubersuggest<\/a><\/strong>? You can run them to analyze the competition\u2019s content as well. Type in their URL, look at their top pages and see what\u2019s working for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">On Facebook, use <strong>Pages to Watch<\/strong>. It\u2019s a robust Insights tool that gives you the ability to analyze a ton of interesting data. Once you\u2019ve added a brand page to your list, you\u2019ll be able to see the following stats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Total page <strong>likes<\/strong> (and the % +\/- change from the previous week)<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">How many times they\u2019ve <strong>posted<\/strong> to Facebook this week<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Their <strong>total engagement<\/strong> count for the week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">When you click on a specific brand\u2019s icon in your list, Facebook provides a detailed view of every one of their posts from the current week \u2013 ranking them from the \u201cmost engaging\u201d to \u201cleast engaging.\u201d This allows you to quickly check the top posts from every page you follow in a matter of seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">I recommend \u201cwatching\u201d your top peers, brands and influencers that you admire in your space, brands that have a strong social media presence in your space, etc.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image regular\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.storychief.com\/account_481\/you-x-ventures-Oalh2MojUuk-unsplash_8a5ca3aa317bb6621ff7c4f3a1fa1906_800.jpg\" alt=\"\"><figcaption class=\"translation-block\">Steal a content idea and turn it into something that could\u2019ve only been created by your brand \u2013 Photo by You X Ventures on Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Don\u2019t stop there though!<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Subscribe to your competitors\u2019 <strong>email<\/strong> campaigns to keep an eye on what is working (and what\u2019s not). Look at their <strong>landing pages, e-books, webinars, white papers<\/strong> and even product descriptions to see what they\u2019re doing well (and not so well). You never know when (or where) an idea is going to strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">I\u2019m sure I don\u2019t need to remind you that, whatever ideas you\u2019re borrowing from the competition, you <strong>shouldn\u2019t just copy\/paste<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">If they\u2019re getting all their traffic from their \u2018How To Find Your Soulmate on Tinder Manual\u2019, it can be tempting to build off their success and create your own Ultimate Tinder Guide. However, imitation always puts you behind your competitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">It\u2019s a far better strategy to take that inspiration from your peers as <strong>a starting point<\/strong> for content ideation. You may find that you\u2019re really famous (or would like to be) for your own matchmaking services. Or, you could decide that romance isn\u2019t your cup of tea at all and you want to focus on something entirely different.\u00a0\ud83e\udd40<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Whatever you do, refer back to your <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/content-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">content strategy<\/a> and keep your own brand story in mind.<\/p>\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\">\n<h2 id=\"2un94\">6. Digging Deeper with Analytics<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Of course, if you\u2019re already publishing content, you may not have to go very far at all to dig for content gold.\u00a0 One of the best ways to find out what your audience likes is to use your analytics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Check your website\u2019s native analytics or install <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Analytics<\/a><\/strong> for more insights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">On the left sidebar go to Behavior &gt; Site Content &gt; All Pages. Once in the Pages screen, select the date range you\u2019d like to see. Click on \u201cApply\u201d, scroll down, and you will see a list of all your blog posts, and pages, in descending order by pageviews. This list shows your blog\u2019s most popular content for the selected date range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Your <a href=\"https:\/\/statusbrew.com\/insights\/social-media-analytics-tools\/\"><strong>social media analytics<\/strong><\/a> can also tell you what\u2019s working and what\u2019s not. On Facebook, for example, go to your Page Insights &gt; Posts and manually scroll through your posts with high reach or engagement. You can also find your top posts on <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/\">Instagram<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.twitter.com\/\">Twitter<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/4499\/viewing-company-page-analytics?lang=en\">LinkedIn<\/a><\/u>, and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.pinterest.com\/\">Pinterest<\/a><\/u> using their respective native analytics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Take some time to study your top-performing posts and re-create, recycle and reinvent them. Try to <strong>identify patterns<\/strong> by asking yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Do the posts share a common theme or topic?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Is one particular category more popular than others?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Is the content from a particular source? Your blog? Other sources?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Does a particular content type \u2014 text, image, or video \u2014 perform consistently better than others?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Does a certain style speak more to your audience (long reads vs. short articles, case studies vs. research-based pieces,\u2026)?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Did people leave any interesting comments on those posts?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Double down on whatever seems to be working best for your audience.<\/p>\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\">\n<h2 id=\"768pi\">7. Follow Trends<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To make sure you\u2019re focusing on the right keywords in your content, put a few variations of those keywords into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/trends\/\">Google Trends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Ever wonder why this post is focused on content ideas rather than on content marketing ideas, for example? A glance at this graph should be all the info you need.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image regular\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.storychief.com\/account_481\/content-ideas-google-trends_d11fa55562479f881e6f3c14375f29de_800.JPG\" alt=\"check content ideas in Google Trends\"><figcaption class=\"translation-block\">Compare search interest in different keywords using Google Trends.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\">\n<h2 id=\"a5rsf\">8. Extra Tip: Keep a Swipe File<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">If you go through this process, it\u2019s very likely that you\u2019ll end up with a huge pile of ideas \u2013 way too many to act upon immediately. Whatever you do \u2013 don\u2019t just chuck them in the bin.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend keeping a file of all the ideas that inspire you: <strong class=\"translation-block\">a swipe file<\/strong>. Keep feeding this file and refer to it whenever you need inspiration for content.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image regular\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d37oebn0w9ir6a.cloudfront.net\/account_481\/giphy-2_bf2d8c48f55f15c0c1b5e6a6543bd7b2.gif\" alt=\"Keep your content ideas organized - South Park gif\"><figcaption class=\"translation-block\">Keep your friends close, your enemies closer and your content ideas organized.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Feel free to <strong>organize<\/strong> it in whatever form works for you: an app, a physical file, a scrapbook, an email folder, \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Some of my favorite tools include <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.evernote.com\/\">Evernote<\/a><\/u> (if you get the pro version, it allows you to search even your notes scribbled by hand), <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trello.com\/\">Trello<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asana.com\/\">Asana<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/\">Pinterest<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A lot of these tools will allow you to copy or clip things directly from your browser. I personally also like to dictate ideas into my phone as they often come to me when I\u2019m out and about or talking to someone (if not, they are usually lost forever).<\/p>\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\">\n<p><em class=\"translation-block\">How do you usually come up with ideas for content?
