Iconic Products episode 013<\/h3>\n

If \u201cproduct crushes\u201d were a thing like celebrity crushes, mine would be Notion.<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source>\"i<\/picture><\/figure>\n

It\u2019s one of the best products in the SaaS world right now \u2013 and there\u2019s a chance you\u2019ve never even heard of it. \ud83e\udd37\u200d\u2640\ufe0f<\/p>\n

In any case, it was dubbed the app to watch in 2018<\/a><\/u>, with good reason.<\/p>\n

The company isn\u2019t even a few years old and has already started to reshape how we work, collaborate and store information.<\/p>\n

Even The Wall Street Journal referred to Notion as, \u201cthe only app you need for work-life productivity<\/a><\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, well, I couldn\u2019t agree more. \ud83d\ude0d<\/p>\n

When I discovered Notion completely by accident on (in?) the App Store about a year or so ago, I was blown away. I hadn\u2019t been this excited for a product since my first iPhone.<\/p>\n

Now, I\u2019m thrilled to bring you a Notion-filled episode of Iconic Products! \ud83c\udf89<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source>\"excited\"<\/picture><\/figure>\n

Something to note: no, I\u2019m not getting paid to write about Notion and I have zero affiliation with them whatsoever. I just genuinely love this product so much \u2013 and I think you will, too.<\/p>\n

Alright, let\u2019s get to it. \ud83d\udc4a<\/p>\n

Slow down, Speed Racer. What the heck is Notion anyway?<\/h2>\n

Alright, let\u2019s back up for a sec. Notion is an all-in-one workspace that is designed to, well, store just about anything you can think of. \ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n

Create wikis, to-do lists<\/a>, reading lists, project plans, budgets, photo galleries, blogs \u2013 yes, really anything.<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source>\"wow\"<\/picture><\/figure>\n

Plus, it\u2019s available on desktop, iOS and, most recently, Android<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n

Think about it this way: your digital life is probably strewn about in your Google Drive, Evernote account, email inbox, Trello boards\u2026you get the idea.<\/p>\n

Well, in the form of pages and links, you can take all of that information and put it into one cohesive, pretty and fun database. \ud83d\uddc3<\/p>\n

Some people might like to create editorial calendars and blog posts in Notion, others might prefer to just store banana bread recipes<\/a> and YouTube videos they want to watch later. Basically, you can make your Notion workspace as complicated or as simple as you\u2019d like.<\/p>\n

You can include your personal content as well as professional content in the same space, but still keep them separated \u2013 such as the screenshot below.<\/p>\n

As you can see, the product is clean, crisp and easy to navigate \u2013 but still has everything you could possibly need in your digital life.<\/p>\n

Each of those lines of text open up to pages that contain all of the information you want \u2013 whether it\u2019s a spreadsheet, calendar, blog post or even a kanban board.<\/p>\n

Amazing, right?<\/p>\n

Maybe you\u2019re starting to see why I nerd out so hard over this product \u2013 it\u2019s so simple and so brilliant at the same time. \ud83e\udd13<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s go a bit deeper.<\/p>\n

Sure, I\u2019ve briefly explained what the product is at its surface, but let\u2019s dig into what you can do<\/em> with it.<\/p>\n

\n

Simple, beautiful, powerful<\/h2>\n

As Notion puts it, \u201cSolve your problems your way, bounded only by your imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s true: there are plenty of amazing examples of people using Notion in incredible ways.<\/p>\n

Similar to Airtable<\/a> Universe, though much more lightweight, is Notion Pages<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n

Here, you can submit examples of your own Notion pages and get inspiration from others. \ud83e\udd18<\/p>\n

From a curriculum sample<\/a><\/u> to a virtual bookshelf, shown below, there are some incredible ways people are using this product.<\/p>\n

<\/source><\/source>\"notion<\/picture><\/figure>\n

Personally, I use Notion as a running to-do list, an ideas board, a space for travel planning and as a way to organize links that I want to read\/watch later.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what makes this product so iconic: much like Airtable<\/a> and Trello<\/a>, there\u2019s no right or wrong way to use it. \ud83d\ude4c<\/p>\n

Basically, Notion is built around three core features:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Wikis: <\/strong>Similar to a website, where you can create, edit and design your own layout.<\/li>\n
  2. Documents: <\/strong>Open your documents and work completely offline.<\/li>\n
  3. Tasks: <\/strong>Create tasks on new boards or design your own to-do list.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    By separating the core features in an easy and flexible way, it means that users can still use documents for tasks, for example, or add documents to tasks. It\u2019s all completely modular and customizable. \ud83d\udee0<\/p>\n

    Want to create a task and link it back to a blog post you\u2019re writing within Notion (or even elsewhere)? You can do that.<\/p>\n

    Want to build a product roadmap and link it back to a kanban board? Spoiler alert: you can do that, too. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

    Replacing tools, simplifying processes<\/h2>\n

    To put it succinctly, I give you a quote from the aforementioned WSJ article that gets to the heart of what I mean by this:<\/p>\n

    \u201cNotion fuses the best of [Evernote, Google Docs, Keep, Trello, Asana]\u2014and others\u2014into a rare renaissance app, proficient in countless methods of creation and organization. I can\u2019t put a price on the peace of mind that comes from an unfragmented life. Wait, yes I can: It\u2019s eight bucks a month.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    (I should note here that there is in fact a free version of Notion, but the paid version is between $4-$16 a month depending on your plan, hence the mention of the $8 cost.)<\/p>\n

    Yep \u2013 Notion replaces, and sometimes even surpasses, many of the products you\u2019re probably using on a regular basis (thankfully, it doesn\u2019t replace your favorite CRM!). \ud83d\ude33<\/p>\n

    <\/source><\/source>\"bye\"<\/picture><\/figure>\n

    As we discussed in the last section, Notion can do pretty much anything you want it to.<\/p>\n

    So, logically, it makes sense that this product can be used in a way that carries out similar functions of Trello, Google Docs and more.<\/p>\n

    And unsurprisingly, this is exactly what Notion is aiming for. \ud83d\ude80<\/p>\n

    As they explain on their website, \u201cGoogle Docs made typewriters multiplayer. Dropbox brought file cabinets to the cloud. But conceptually, they evolved little beyond their Industrial Revolution ancestors. We duct-tape everything together with emails, copy\/paste and countless open tabs.\u201d<\/p>\n

    So that\u2019s where they stepped in and created a space that combines all of these elements into one product.<\/p>\n

    You can even use it as a wiki to share with people as a portfolio website.<\/p>\n

    By removing the need for toggling from tool to tool, Notion has created a workflow that is seamless and, most importantly, in one place. \ud83d\udc4d<\/p>\n

    But what if you want to use Notion as a team?<\/p>\n

    Next-level collaboration<\/h2>\n

    Notion allows you to collaborate across workspaces \u2013 which means you can keep your own workspace private if you\u2019d like, and then invite users to work-related spaces. \ud83d\udc6b<\/p>\n

    This creates even more levels of awesome possibilities.<\/p>\n

    If you want to collaborate with colleagues on a project<\/a><\/u>, you can do so by creating roadmaps, kanban boards of deliverables, lists of resources and even upload prototypes or drafts that need feedback.<\/p>\n

    <\/source><\/source>\"\"<\/picture><\/figure>\n

    From there, you can receive comments inline from collaborators and make edits accordingly. \u270d<\/p>\n

    No more sharing Google Doc links back and forth, no more separated Trello board from your workspace.<\/p>\n

    And that\u2019s certainly a breath of fresh air. \ud83d\udc86\u200d\u2640\ufe0f<\/p>\n

    While there are some people out there who aren\u2019t fully convinced that Notion is there\u2026yet<\/a><\/u>, it\u2019s just a matter of trying it out for yourself and seeing how it fits into your workflow.<\/p>\n

    There are plenty of resources out there to get you started, from this one<\/a><\/u> to this one<\/a><\/u>, plus some unique ideas for other things you can build<\/a><\/u> in Notion.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s really, really<\/em> exciting to see where Notion is headed next. \ud83d\udcaa<\/p>\n
