How Slack became a leading communication platform<\/h1>\n

Slack is only about five years old, but it\u2019s become the fastest-growing SaaS company of all time. \ud83d\udcc8<\/p>\n

And for good reason: it\u2019s a beautiful communication platform that brings companies together and helps eliminate much of the annoying email clutter that many offices face.<\/p>\n

So, how did Slack achieve its meteoric rise to tech fame \u2014 from a $0 to a $5 billion valuation in less than 5 years? Let\u2019s break it down and discuss the product a bit more in-depth! \ud83d\udc49<\/p>\n

Slack\u2019s incredible growth trajectory<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Founded by Cal Henderson and Flickr\u2019s Stewart Butterfield, the communication platform<\/a> got attention immediately: 8,000 customers signed up for the service within 24 hours of its initial launch in August 2013.<\/p>\n

But as you already know, it didn\u2019t stop there. In February 2015, the company claimed that about 10,000 new daily active users were signing up each week, and that they had more than 135,000 paying customers spread across 60,000 teams. \ud83e\udd1d<\/p>\n

By April 2015, those numbers had grown to 200,000 paid subscribers and a total of 750,000 daily active users. Late in 2015, Slack passed more than a million daily active users.<\/p>\n

And despite the competition in the chat platform world<\/a>, from products such as Facebook for Work, Microsoft Teams and Atlassian HipChat, Slack passed six million daily active users and nine million weekly users in late 2017.<\/p>\n

As of late 2017, they had more than 50,000 teams paying for its service, which accounts for around two million paid users.<\/p>\n

According to Gartner, Slack was one of the first to participate in the business flow collaboration market and remains the leader, with 100% ARR growth (which is incredibly fast for a company of its size) and more than 70% market share in the workstream collaboration space. \ud83d\ude80<\/p>\n

Needless to say, Slack has hit legendary status in the SaaS world.<\/p>\n

Slack realized something important from the beginning: emails\u00a0suck<\/strong><\/h4>\n

One thing that especially helped Slack become what it is today is the fact that they created the right platform at the right time \u2014 and they understood one crucial detail: people hate internal emails<\/strong>. \ud83d\udcec<\/p>\n

This paved the way for a product that would cut down on unnecessary inbox clutter, and help further build communities within companies.<\/p>\n

It helps with transparency within companies as well \u2014 messages that would have normally been emails can just be dropped into a quick message in a channel, so that the team is informed without needing to CC everyone on an endless thread of emails.<\/p>\n

According to Slack, users on average spend 10 hours each weekday with the platform open on their desktop and mobile device \u2014 that\u2019s a lot of time spent on a chat platform, but that\u2019s the beauty of it: Slack helps you get work done.<\/p>\n

While Slack is similar to instant messaging platforms that were popular on the internet years ago, it still helps different departments and teams of a company communicate in real time, rather than having to wait for people to reply to emails or wait for a scheduled meeting (which wastes even more time in the end). \u23f3<\/p>\n

Slack preserves every message in one easily searchable archive, and those messages exist outside of your inbox, reducing clutter and helping ease email overload.<\/p>\n

Slack focuses on these three things in order to successfully replace\u00a0email<\/strong><\/h4>\n

One awesome aspect of Slack that helps cement its iconic status is the fact that it\u2019s a beautiful, easy-to-use, well-designed product.<\/p>\n

Butterfield hired design agency MetaLab to turn their early prototype into the polished product that we all know and use even to this day.<\/p>\n

And while MetaLab founder Andrew Wilkinson didn\u2019t even know that Slack would become popular or grow as fast as it has, he explained that<\/a>, \u201c[like] a well-built home, great software focuses on giving its users hundreds of small, satisfying interactions.\u201d \ud83c\udfe0<\/p>\n

And Slack certainly delivers on that front, through its three core product aspects: search, synchronization and simple file sharing<\/a>. It just feels well built<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Search <\/strong>\u2014 quite similar to Gmail\u2019s approach, Slack understood the value of their product was in helping people find what they\u2019re looking for quickly.<\/p>\n

As Butterfield has pointed out in an interview<\/a> with Fast Company, \u201cPeople need to feel confident that when they read a document or conversation, they don\u2019t have to worry about labeling or storing it \u2014 that they\u2019ll be able to find it again later if and when they need it.\u201d \ud83d\udc4d<\/p>\n

Synchronization <\/strong>\u2014 On synchronization, Butterfield said, \u201cOne of the things that drove us nuts about every other internal platform was that it was very difficult to pick up in the same place when you switched devices\u2013say, when you left your laptop and picked something back up on your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ability to sync your conversations seamlessly with the desktop and mobile app from the beginning has given Slack the competitive edge \u2014 it also knows where every person has left off a conversation, and the product syncs to that position in real time.<\/p>\n

Simple file sharing \u2014 <\/strong>Slack is incredibly intuitive in its UI, so it\u2019s natural that they\u2019ve created simple file-sharing options. Slack helps users save time and have a better experience by letting them drag and drop files and paste images directly into the chat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Unlike email, Slack is built to be\u00a0fun<\/strong><\/h4>\n

From the colorful branding to the funny quotes that pop up on your loading screen \u2014 Slack takes every opportunity possible to inject a bit of playfulness into the user experience.<\/p>\n

This is especially true in their onboarding process. When you\u2019re waiting for it to load, like the platform itself, it will display funny quotes and at the end of the process, the Slackbot will even make a joke about being \u201cdumb\u201d and \u201ctypically understanding words like yes or yup or nope.\u201d \ud83e\udd16<\/p>\n

The entire process is very human and engaging, which increases word-of-mouth promotion from users. They show<\/em> you the product, rather than just telling you about it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s even fun to the point that it can sometimes feel like you\u2019re, well, slacking. Yet, it\u2019s a tool that helps you collaborate among teammates and get stuff done.<\/p>\n

Slack vs. email: more addictive or more annoying?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

According to Growth Hackers, Slack considers the 2,000 message mark to be a critical metric. From the moment someone enters their email address to request a link to a team, the app is designed to drive users to this number. \ud83d\udd11<\/p>\n

But the addictive nature of having a feed isn\u2019t for everyone \u2014 there are plenty of examples out there of companies that had self-described nightmarish experiences switching their internal communication to Slack.<\/p>\n

There are some people who argue that the feed created more confusion for teams, as conversations would get lost unless you were constantly staying on top of your unread messages (Slack kind of fixed this, to be fair \u2014 more on that in a minute).<\/p>\n

Slack also felt disorganized for some, which led only to an illusion of transparency. \ud83d\ude45\u200d<\/p>\n

Of course, Slack works best if your entire team is actively using it \u2014 and if said team is using it in a productive way. It can easily get out of hand if your company doesn\u2019t have an internal communication process in place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Slack brings everything together in one place by building out integrations<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Slack integrates with just about any app \u2014 easily \u2014 which also adds value to its users. Especially when it comes to the apps that many companies rely on daily; it just makes Slack more indispensable and a handy means of streamlining in-company communication.<\/p>\n

There are tons of integrations out there (Salesflare included, via Zapier!), so it\u2019d be nearly impossible to talk about all of them in one post, but you can integrate, for example, productivity tools<\/a> such as Asana and Trello, or just fun tools such as Giphy and Meme Bot.<\/p>\n

Slack understands that in order to (success)fully replace email, they need to integrate with every app from which their target audience would normally get email notifications. \u2705<\/p>\n

Slack aims for instant perfection<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Slack\u2019s design is largely unchanged from MetaLab\u2019s original design, but the features that have<\/em> been released since then weren\u2019t without lots of testing and iterations.<\/p>\n

Take Threads, for example: the exploration into this product feature took Slack nearly two years to complete before rollout. And the project went through six iterations within this time! Threads allow users to discuss particular topics as separate conversations, which prevents asynchronous conversations from clogging up your channels.<\/p>\n
