You\u2019re saying you want to sell to people without seeing them face-to-face? That won\u2019t work properly. You\u2019re wasting your time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Well, the truth is: it\u2019s highly effective. And it\u2019s taking sales over by storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">According to <u><a href=\"https:\/\/salesloft.com\/resources\/blog\/inside-vs-outside-sales-infographic\/\">Salesloft<\/a><\/u>, for every outside\/field sales rep being hired, there are ten inside\/remote sales reps being brought on right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Now, whether you\u2019re consciously choosing remote over field sales, or you have to stay home because of some nasty virus, we\u2019ve compiled a handy guide for you that will make you more successful at it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This guide covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><u><a href=\"#65vgb\">What we mean with remote sales<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><u><a href=\"#7top2\">What the advantages and difficulties of it are<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><u><a href=\"#d2vbk\">How you can sell remotely like a pro<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><u><a href=\"#drkk1\">How to manage a remote sales team<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><u><a href=\"#29sm4\">And as a bonus: How to generate leads remotely<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Here we go \ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 id=\"65vgb\">What is remote selling?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">It may be obvious, but let\u2019s make sure we\u2019re on the same page.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p class=\"translation-block\">Remote sales is when you, the salesperson, and your prospect are never in the same location during the whole sales process.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">It\u2019s evidently possible that a big part of your <u><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/sales-process\">sales process<\/a><\/u> is remote and that you\u2019re meeting up with the client once or a few times throughout the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">For the sake of this guide, however, we\u2019ll focus on 100% remote sales.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 id=\"7top2\">What are the advantages and difficulties of remote sales?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Now, what are the pros and cons of remote sales?<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Let\u2019s explore this and then discuss how to deal with them in the next section.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The biggest difficulty, and the reason why most old school sales reps believe you will fail, is:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4n46s\">Selling remotely makes it more difficult to connect on a personal level<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">According to Dr. Albert Mehrabian\u2019s book <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Silent-messages-Albert-Mehrabian\/dp\/0534000592\">Silent Messages (1971)<\/a><\/u>, communication between a salesperson and a prospect is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">7% spoken words<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">38% tone of voice<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">And 55% body language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Whether that breakdown is fully accurate or not, the point is: much of the communication gets lost if you can\u2019t see each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/showcase\/best-conference-call-services-compared\/\">video calling software<\/a>, you can see each other and read some body language, but this technology by itself never fully solves the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Much of what we\u2019ll discuss in \u201c<u><a href=\"#d2vbk\">How to sell remotely like a pro<\/a><\/u>\u201d is how to deal with this difficulty and make the best of it regardless.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1hi4t\">It\u2019s harder to stay motivated if you have less personal contact<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Most salespeople are extraverts. We need to fuel up our energy by being in touch with others. If you don\u2019t see your prospects, this isn\u2019t easy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">That\u2019s one of the reasons why it\u2019s important to <u><a href=\"#f9r19\">be as personable as possible<\/a><\/u> (it helps make the juices flow) and also a big reason for <u><a href=\"#c2imk\">building daily habits<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8elf3\">But: remote sales makes you much more productive<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Despite the two big difficulties we just discussed, the advantage is huge: remote sales massively boosts your productivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">First, imagine the day of a field sales person, driving from prospect to prospect, waiting in lobbies, getting coffees, walking in and out of meeting rooms, \u2026 It\u2019s a lot of time lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">When we just started <u><a href=\"https:\/\/salesflare.com\/\">Salesflare<\/a><\/u> I would go on the road to visit prospects. A perfectly planned day with no incidents would mean that I would visit 4 prospects maximum, assuming one hour meetings with each one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Now, imagine switching to remote sales and staying in the same place. Suddenly you\u2019re able to double the amount of one hour meetings you can have in a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">What\u2019s more: when I switched to remote sales, all of a sudden these one hour meetings could be turned into 30 minute meetings. A lot of the time we\u2019d normally spend moving around, getting coffee, waiting for something or someone, exchanging pleasantries, \u2026 could all of a sudden be reduced to a minimum. My sales capacity was quadrupled!<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Other things also got dramatically easier:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookafy.com\/online-scheduling\/\" class=\"translation-block\">Booking meetings<\/a> could be done using a scheduling link, as I didn\u2019t have to carefully calculate traffic and buffer times anymore. This instantly cut my email traffic in half.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">It got much easier to switch between conversations and other types of work, as I was spending my time behind my computer anyway.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">And I became less disconnected from the rest of our team, as before it was harder to stay in touch when I was spending my time driving and in meetings. Using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dialpad.com\/features\/business-text-messaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.dialpad.com\/features\/business-text-messaging\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683792765236000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2TFvnrs4awMKxNW9vK64vO\">business text messaging service<\/a>\u00a0can also be a great way to stay in touch with prospects and customers during remote sales.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Long story short: remote sales are way more productive, as long as you know how to deal with the difficulties.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 id=\"d2vbk\">How to sell remotely like a pro<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Now let\u2019s discuss how you can deal with the difficulties of remote sales successfully while capitalizing on its advantages. \ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"f9r19\">Be as personable as possible<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">When people meet you through a screen, make sure you show the human being behind that screen. Create a connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The opposite situation is one we know all too well: someone reads something in a Facebook comment, reacts to it forgetting there\u2019s a human being at the other end, and turns into a rude keyboard warrior. Things are said that probably wouldn\u2019t have been said in a face-to-face conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To be as personable as possible, here\u2019s a few things you can do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use video calling over phone calling and always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movavi.com\/screen-recorder\/\">turn on your video<\/a>, even if just for the beginning of the conversation (internet connections can be bad). It sets a warmer tone for the conversation.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Be yourself and a bit more informal than you\u2019d be in a face-to-face meeting. Make a bit of time for small talk. It\u2019s good to compensate a bit for the difficulties with creating a personal connection remotely.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Try using chat or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dialmycalls.com\/texting\">sms texting<\/a> instead of emails between video calls. Its interactivity makes for much stronger bonds.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">If you end up calling without video anyway, use sounds that clearly communicate what you\u2019re doing, like a laugh when you\u2019re smiling, a \u201chmm\u201d sound when you\u2019re thinking, etc. to make a stronger connection. Use your tone of voice abundantly.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Experiment with tools like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonjoro.com\/\">Bonjoro<\/a><\/u> to replace some of your messages with video messages. It\u2019ll create much more engagement.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Bring up important things you remember from previous conversations more than you would in a face-to-face conversation. Don\u2019t limit yourself to business, but also bring up personal interests of your prospect.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Ask whether you\u2019re pronouncing their name correctly. It shows you care. (My first name \u201cJeroen\u201d is pronounced \u201cYa-roon\u201d in case you were wondering. \ud83d\ude0f)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"7ahvg\">Closely track your customers\u2019 interest and interactions<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">When your conversation becomes digital and you can\u2019t really look each other in the eyes anymore, you need to find other ways to read your prospects\u2019 body language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">That\u2019s where <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/best-sales-tracking-software\">sales tracking software<\/a> comes in. It enables you to read your prospects\u2019 \u201cdigital body language\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Here\u2019s what\u2019s possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/phonexa.com\/blog\/email-deliverability-guide\/\">track when prospects open emails<\/a> and when they click on links in them.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You can keep track of when they visit your website, what pages they look at, and how long they look at these pages. (Is it the pricing page? That\u2019s a good sign!)<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You can use very similar tracking in documents and proposals.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">And finally, you can get live notifications of when these things happen, so you can time your follow-up actions flawlessly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">There are hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/best-email-trackers\">email tracking solutions<\/a> out there. A few of those also offer integrated website tracking. Almost none of them also send you live notifications of the tracking on your phone and\/or computer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Our CRM, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/salesflare.com\/\">Salesflare<\/a><\/u>, however does. There\u2019s tools like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.docsend.com\/\">DocSend<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/attach.io\/\">Attach<\/a><\/u> that will allow you to upload them and then tell you when someone reads them online.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Want to track when your proposals are sent? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pandadoc.com\/proposal-software\/\">Proposal software<\/a> like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/betterproposals.io\/\">Better Proposals<\/a><\/u> take care of this for you. You\u2019ll get detailed reports of how people read them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"6jfv3\">Keep building your relationship via social media<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Some salespeople hang out at the country club to strengthen their network. If you\u2019re selling remotely, you\u2019ll probably need to <a href=\"https:\/\/whop.com\/blog\/sell-products-online\/\">take this online<\/a> as well. Your virtual country club: social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">How to start? Just connect with your prospects and customers on LinkedIn, Facebook and\/or Twitter. Whatever makes most sense in your industry or with your type of clients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">I personally try to connect with every user that gets on Salesflare (provided they use a company email address so I can properly identify them). Don\u2019t believe me? Just <u><a href=\"https:\/\/salesflare.com\">start a trial<\/a><\/u> and count the minutes to my LinkedIn request. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Then you can start a friendly conversation. Ask for feedback. Share helpful content on your feed. And if you think of something that will help a specific person: share it with them personally. (But please, don\u2019t send this kind of message at scale.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Be personable and helpful. Treat your social media friends like real friends, to the extent possible.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3gic7\">Organize your meetings &amp; process with maximum efficiency<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Want to maximize your remote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artisan.co\/blog\/sales-productivity-tools\">sales productivity<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Here\u2019s a series of ideas for you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcita.com\/software\/online_scheduling\">meeting scheduler<\/a>, like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/youcanbook.me\/\">YouCanBook.me<\/a><\/u> or <u><a href=\"https:\/\/calendly.com\/\">Calendly<\/a><\/u>. It takes away so much of the email traffic if you\u2019re scheduling a lot of meetings. And nobody minds using the link. I always say: \u201cYou can choose a good moment to talk via\u2026\u201d and then insert my link.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Set up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goreminders.com\/text-reminders\">automated reminders<\/a> in your meeting scheduler. Adding a reminder one hour before the meeting has reduced the amount of no show to a minimum for me.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use <a href=\"https:\/\/fixthephoto.com\/best-video-conferencing-software.html\">video calling software<\/a> with a personal link. This allows you to insert that link in your automatic scheduling tool. When the meeting\u2019s starting, just head to that link. Easy!<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Alternatively, some video calling software tools like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vectera.com\/\">Vectera<\/a><\/u> allow you to create a room per prospect. You can share documents there and use it as your personalized meeting room with them.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Or if you want a video platform specifically for sales, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/demodesk.com\/\">Demodesk<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/crankwheel.com\/screen-sharing\/\">Crankwheel<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">When someone books a first meeting with you, you can automatically create them in your CRM. For example, we created <u><a href=\"https:\/\/zapier.com\/app\/editor\/template\/20902\">this Zapier template<\/a><\/u> that easily connects YouCanBook.me with Salesflare.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Set up automated reminders to add meeting notes after each meeting with a prospect. This is standard in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/salesflare.com\/\">Salesflare<\/a><\/u>, but can also be set up with a bit of Zapier magic.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fireflies.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/fireflies.ai\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1638890611636000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3neQeCVf8P2bFsCOy9_Tnx\">automatic transcription software<\/a>, like Fireflies. It automatically records and transcribes your calls, as well as surfaces important insights and sentiment analysis from your calls. Once these habits are in place you\u2019ll find it way easier to stay on track, regardless of your motivation levels on a particular day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Focus on following up x customers per day, placing x calls, creating x new opportunities, \u2026 What makes most sense all depends on how your sales process works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Try setting these goals in collaboration with your sales manager. Your manager might even set input-level sales quotas and it\u2019s good when they\u2019re aligned. Which brings us to the next point\u2026<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 id=\"drkk1\">How to manage a remote sales team<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"f9h04\">Set clear goals &amp; manage on input-level sales goals first<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Want to keep your sales people on track while <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/manage-remote-team\">working remotely<\/a>? (You got it, this is the same point I made just above, but then from a sales manager\u2019s perspective.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Setting clear goals will help. This makes sure that your sales people know exactly what is expected of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A word of caution however: while you might immediately think of revenue goals, it\u2019s highly unlikely that setting these alone will keep your sales team motivated. What keeps them motivated is seeing constant progress and deals might only be closed every now and then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The best way to solve this is by setting input-level goals or quotas. This can be the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Amount of calls placed<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Amount of meetings scheduled<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Amount of meetings done<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Amount of emails sent<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Amount of chat conversations had<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Amount of leads talked to<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To learn all about this, check out <u><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/sales-quota\">this guide I wrote on sales quotas<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7f41g\">Make the team coachable by sharing everything in one place<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">One of your most important roles as a sales manager \u2013 if not the most important one \u2013 is to coach your sales team. (You can read much <u><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.salesflare.com\/sales-management\">more on the topic of sales management here<\/a><\/u>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Apart from tracking the numbers (as in my previous point), you\u2019ll need to get insight into the conversations your team is having with your prospects. Otherwise there\u2019s no way you can help them improve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">What\u2019s best is to start sharing everything in one place. You can also ask your sales reps to CC you on every email, but your mailbox will be flooded and you\u2019ll still miss part of what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Get a CRM that pulls in the full conversations with prospects, including all the emails, meetings, calls, notes, \u2026 and how these prospects interact with your emails and website (using tracking).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image regular \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d37oebn0w9ir6a.cloudfront.net\/account_481\/2-AutomaticLogging_7ce27fe67f8e09dbc85d7e08da4dda41.gif\" alt=\"\"><figcaption class=\"translation-block\">Just hook up your emails, calendar and phone and it all gets pulled in automatically. \u2728<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Another thing a CRM will help you with is visualizing your sales team\u2019s pipeline of opportunities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image regular \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d37oebn0w9ir6a.cloudfront.net\/account_481\/1-Pipeline_dd11491f65b7a2ba2f23bc5f987c6015.gif\" alt=\"\"><figcaption class=\"translation-block\">Visualize your pipeline of sales opportunities\u2026 and easily rearrange it. \ud83d\uddb1\ufe0f<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Why that\u2019s important: it won\u2019t only help your team to keep track of what they\u2019re working on; it\u2019s also a great starting point during coaching sessions with your team, which brings us to the next point: \ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"eh9cb\">Organize weekly sales pipeline reviews (&amp; daily stand-up meetings)<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Many of our customers organize weekly or biweekly sales pipeline review meetings with their sales team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This has a few advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You can align on the next steps that should be taken with prospects.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You can run through the pipeline and make sure it\u2019s all up to date. You might change the stage, probability, or value of an opportunity. Or get it out of the way if it\u2019s not relevant anymore. This will result in a better overview and better revenue forecasts.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">If there\u2019s any other issues, these can be identified and discussed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">If you want to take it one step further, you can introduce daily stand-up meetings, as is a habit in tech startups and software development environments. Whatever works best for your team!<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"agrat\">Build in watercooler moments &amp; promote camaraderie<\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A simple thing, but easily forgotten: when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oberlo.com\/blog\/work-remotely\">working remotely<\/a> you can easily miss the connection with the rest of the team that comes naturally when you work in the same room or stand together at the watercooler (or the coffee machine).<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Want to introduce these moments for informal chats within the team in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/blog\/best-u-s-cities-hybrid-work\/\">remote setting<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">You can always plan a recurring video call around lunch or at some dedicated point of the day, where you can chat about things that are not related to work.
