Un exemple courant pourrait \u00eatre l'estimation d'une variable d'int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 une date future donn\u00e9e.  La pr\u00e9diction est un terme similaire, mais plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Les deux peuvent se r\u00e9f\u00e9rer \u00e0 des m\u00e9thodes statistiques formelles utilisant des s\u00e9ries temporelles, des donn\u00e9es transversales ou longitudinales, ou encore \u00e0 des m\u00e9thodes moins formelles bas\u00e9es sur le jugement.  L'usage peut varier selon les domaines d'application : par exemple, en hydrologie, les termes \"pr\u00e9vision\" et \"forecasting\" sont parfois r\u00e9serv\u00e9s aux estimations de valeurs \u00e0 certains moments pr\u00e9cis, tandis que le terme \"prediction\" est utilis\u00e9 pour des estimations plus g\u00e9n\u00e9rales, telles que le nombre de fois que des inondations se produiront sur une longue p\u00e9riode. Le risque et l'incertitude sont au c\u0153ur de la pr\u00e9vision et de la pr\u00e9diction ; il est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme une bonne pratique d'indiquer le degr\u00e9 d'incertitude li\u00e9 aux pr\u00e9visions.
